Crunches DO NOT Create a Six-Pack

Tuesday, September 10, 2019

We all strive towards creating that impossible to reach six pack. The problem is that most people wanting to achieve a six pack think endless crunches and ab work is the way to do it, but it takes more than that.

"Unachievable" abs can be possible if you apply these 4 elements:

  1. overall muscle building

  2. cardio

  3. strict nutrition

  4. focused ab work

First, you must understand that no matter what you do to build a six pack if you have overlying fat surrounding the muscle you will not see your hard work show through. One of the most important things to be worked on is burning overall fat in the body. The first 3 elements are geared specifically towards fat burning.

Overall muscle building is important because muscle in general helps to burn fat. In order to boost your metabolism and encourage the fat burning process you must train to develop more overall muscle. The more muscle you build, the more fat your body will burn during exercise as well as at rest, increasing the overall calories you will burn per day.

Cardio is also important because it helps burn more calories than strength training alone. Steady state cardio requires a consistent amount of energy throughout your workout and keeps you in the fat burning zone. Another way to work cardio is with intervals of high intense training incorporating both strength and cardio, just strength or just cardio. This type of training has minimal rest between reps and/or sets and keeps your body moving. What is great about an interval workout is that it puts your your body into a state of “EPOC” or “Afterburn”. EPOC stands for “excessive post-exercise oxygen consumption” which basically means your body will continue to burn calories even after your workout has ended.

Whether you do steady state cardio or interval cardio it is important to get your intensity up to a level where your body is working hard to burn extra calories.

Strict nutrition is probably one of the most important of the first 3 elements in burning fat. I’m sure you’ve heard the expression “Abs are made in the kitchen” and there can’t be a statement more true. You can incorporate the first 2 elements and completely sabotage all your hard work with what you eat. One of the things you need to consider is that fat storage happens because of excess calorie consumption and poor food choices. Fat storage comes only with what you decide to eat. Stop fat from storing in your fat cells all together and you have less overall fat you need to work on burning off. Once fat gets stored in the fat cells it becomes a much bigger process to break it down and eliminate it from your body. You can stop fat storage at the source by controlling what you eat.

You might think that Focused ab work is the most important element to creating a six pack but it is actually the least. This doesn’t mean that it’s not important, it absolutely is. It’s just not the first and only thing to think about. Be sure to get your ab focused exercises in each week to build the ab muscles and surrounding core muscles. These workouts will give you the definition and cuts you are seeking in a six pack.

Apply all of the other 3 elements with your focused ab work and now you will start to get somewhere. You will have burned excess fat stores with overall muscle building and cardio while stopping fat at the source with strict nutrition that discourages excess fat storage. Once and only once you burn the surrounding fat from your abs will you see the six pack you have been working so hard on.
